shubhpuja.comThe festive season of 5 days for Hindus comes with happiness and surprises every year. This is the perfect time of celebrations and receiving the positive energies from the Universe. Devotes invoke the Gods and Goddesses during this period, to receive that extra share of blessings and happiness in Diwali season. This festive period begins with ‘Dhanteras’, which is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the Krishna paksha of the month of Kartik, according to the Hindu calendar.

Dhanteras is also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi as it is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari or Father of Ayurveda. It is believed that during the Samundra manthan when a huge battle was going on for the divine nectar or ‘amrit’; He emerged carrying a pot of elixir. Thus from this day the festival of Dhanteras was named after the divine doctor.

Story of Yama Deepam:

On the day of Dhanteras the female members of the house are observed lighting a ghee lamp outside their home, during evening. The reason for this ritual traces back to the tale of 16 year old Prince (son of King Hima). It was forecasted that the prince will die on the fourth day of his wedding, due to which the King tried to abstain his son from girls.

Still the prince decided to marry one day and told his wife about the prediction. His wife dedicatedly planned to save his husband from the death. She laid out all her ornaments and created heaps of gold and silver coins at the entrance of the sleeping chamber and lit lamps all over the place. She also sang the beautiful hymns all night to keep the prince awake. As the Lord Yama arrived, disguised as a serpent, his eyes were blinded by the bright dazzle of gold. When he tried to enter after climbing the heap he was mesmerized by the hymns and went away. This plan saved his husband from the danger and from then on the ladies begin to light lamps to glorify Lord Yama (God of death).

Thus this is the day to appease Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber by performing their puja and receiving heaps of blessings in return. This day is also marked by the purchase of valuable ornaments, gold, silver and utensils which are also kept during the puja.

Hope this festival brings tons of happiness and prosperity for all 🙂

Akshaya Tritiya

Posted on Updated on

Also known as Akha Teej, Akshaya Tritiya is a holy day for Hindus and Jains. It falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the pan-Indian month of Vaisakha and one of the four most important days for Hindus. It is an auspicious day of the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata. The meaning of the word Akshaya is infinite that which never recede.

In Jain and Hindu calendars, some days of the month are absent in counting and some days (tithi in lunar calendars) come extra, but Akshay tritiya is one day which is never “absent” from the lunar calendar.

The word “Akshaya” means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. It is believed that if you do charity on this day you will be blessed. On Akshay Tritiya, Mrutika worshiped.

Nowadays jewellers have turned the purity into a marketing gimmick. The day is considered auspicious for starting new ventures. The legend is that any venture initiated on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya continues to grow and bring prosperity. Hence, new ventures, like starting a business, construction, etc. is performed on Akshaya Tritiya.

As per Hindu electional astrology (Muhurta) three lunar days (tithis) are auspicious. These are called Sade-Teen Muhurtas also. These Tithis are first Tithi of Bright Half of Chaitra(starting of new year), tenth Tithi of Bright Half of Ashvina (Vijay Dashmi), third Tithi of Bright Half of Vaishakha (Akshay Tritiya- Parshu Jyanti) and first Tithi of Bright Half ofKarttika are called “Sade-Teen (3 ½) Muhurt”. The first three tithis are counted as full and the last one as half Tithi and constitute Sade – Teen Muhurt. Sun and moon are astrologically believed to be at their most exalted equal brightness on this day.

Akshaya Tritiya is also called Navanna Parvam. Akshaya Tritiya falling on a Rohini star Monday is considered more auspicious.

Being Yugadi Tithi, it is most beneficial for performing meritorious (Punya Karma) deeds such as recitations (Japa), penance (Tapa), donations (Dana) ritual bathing (Snaana), sacrifices (Havan), burnt oblations to fire (Hooma). But initiation / conducting of activities like wearing sacred thread (Upnayana), ending of fast, house construction and entering thereof, traveling and plantation is prohibited in certain communities, while most look forward to start/restart relationships, purchases and commitments on this auspicious day. To some, it is beneficial for spiritual and not worldly activities.

Worldly activities can be initiated during currency of this Tithi, however, aspirants must ensure that duration is not sullied by concurrence of malefic times observed according to the Hindu electional principles, and the moments are favourable to the doer by transits of the planets and the like. Aspirants are cautioned against using this Tithi blindly for initiating and conducting all types of life activities. Auspiciousness of the Tithis for specific activity depends upon simultaneous presence of Panchangam Shuddhi, Muhurt Yogasand host of other elements of Hindu electional astrology.

Starting a new activity or buying valuables on Akshaya Tritiya is considered to bring luck and success. The religious merit that is acquired by giving gifts on this day is considered inexhaustible. Many buy new gold jewelry on Akshaya Tritiya.

The gold rush of Akshaya Tritiya is now a phenomenon that manifests every year with a certainty that pays no heed to mundane changes in economic fortunes. But the observance of the auspicious day has in recent times shed its multiple characteristics and come to be viewed only as an auspicious day to buy gold.

Akshaya Tritiya is an important day in the Hindu calendar. It is the third day of the waxing moon in the month of Vaishaka. Its auspiciousness arises from the belief that one year in the life of humans is equivalent to a day in the lives of celestial beings. So, the month Vaishaka is considered the morning of a celestial being’s day. This, combined with the waxing of the moon is a symbol of the rising energies that will last through the year.

According to the scriptures, the celestial specialty of Akshaya Tritiya makes it a particularly good day for four kinds of activities. They are Yajanam (performance of auspicious activities like yagnas and homams), Yaajanam (enabling the performance of auspicious activities by others), Dhaanam (charity) and Pratigraham (acquisition and accumulation of wealth of any sort).Image
